1894年5月18日、富山県礪波郡福野町生まれ。
1919年、東京帝国大学建築学科卒業、逓信省営繕課に入省。
1944年、逓信省営繕課を退職。
1946年、日本大学教授に就任。
1949年、闘病のため、日本大学を退職。
1956年9月8日、死去（62歳）。

本人の死後、資料全般を譲り受けた個人によって自宅で保管。その後、研究用に借り受けた研究機関にて保管。2016年、国立近現代建築資料館への受け入れ打診ののち2017年寄託、2020年寄贈。

吉田の学生時代の作品（１９１９年以前）から最晩年の美松書房（１９５３年）までの、個人の作品だけでなく、逓信省としての作品も含まれている。戦前の日本の近代建築の推進に寄与した吉田鉄郎の公私両方における活動と彼の設計思想を示す貴重な資料である。
